Trail Running

Trail running is such a great way to see the countryside, is much kinder to your body than road running and does a lot for your soul. A sense of adventure, a desire to explore or follow a route on a map are all you need to enjoy the awesome countryside. There are footpaths everywhere (it is even possible to find trails in London) and there is a lot of open access land to explore. In the south west we are lucky to have the 620-mile coastal path from Minehead to Poole.

It is great to run with friends, especially if they are a little crazy like these guys, but it is also good to run on your own and be at one with nature. It is during these times that I have my best thoughts.

Trail running teaches you to be self-sufficient, when things go wrong and you are miles from anywhere it is only you that can sort things out.

Sometimes things can go a little wrong, so it is a good idea to take a sense of humour with you, the right gear, a map and compass. You will also need someone to take the photograph and to laugh at your predicament.

On a slightly more serious note, always take care. It can be a hostile environment and things can change very quickly. You don't want to be a burden on the fantastic rescue services we have in the UK.
